This year’s Altgeld Youth trip to New York City was far more than a travel experience, it was an opportunity for the youth to learn, grow and see themselves in new possibilities. Over four days, the youth explored Harlem and the roots of Hip Hop, visited historical locations like Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, and spent time at the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Visits to Medgar Evers College and New York University were especially meaningful, giving the youth firsthand exposure to college campuses and encouraging them to envision higher education as part of their futures. Through these experiences, the youth strengthened their understanding of history, culture and identity while gaining perspectives that expanded their view of the world and their place
within it.
“This was my first time in New York. This trip helped me appreciate diversity, opened my eyes to new perspectives, different cultures and different forms of art. I loved exploring New York and actually being able to walk through Harlem, Times Square, Manhattan and more. I learned that art, music and history play an important role in New York’s identity. This was a great learning experience for me in New York City.”
